Bulldogs run strong in Idaho

The McDermitt High School track and field team went to Parma High School near Boise, Idaho last Friday.

Even though they didn’t grab a lot of medals, but the boys put up nine personal record performances halfway through their season.

“Parma is a nice little town," said MHS coach Richard Egan. "There were 18 teams there and our kids performed really well. It was a good measuring stick for our relay team, Andrew (Villalobos) ran in place of Alex (Navarro). We had a bad handoff on the last leg or we could have finished third instead of sixth.”

Andrew Villalobos, Ben Draunidalo, Robert Pope, and Jagger Hinkey ran a time of 51.32 seconds in the 4x100 meter relay.

“Alex is running a lot better in the 800," Egan said.  "Another personal record for him today and he is getting close to the school record.”.

Navarro ran 2:22.29 for a 10th-place finish in the 800 meters, and he had another personal best run to finish 14th (5:40.29) in the 1,600 meters race.

Draunidalo (12.9) got the only medal of the day for the Bulldogs with his third-place finish in the 100 meters.

He also finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 4 inches. He  logged a personal record 36-6.5 for seventh place in the triple jump.

“Ben was in lane seven in the 100 meters and he was kind of worried about that,” Egan said. “I told him to just relax and run his race. He shot out of the blocks and was in the lead, but the other kids caught him about three-quarters of the way down and he finished third.”

Hinkey was fourth in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 37-2. Pope (31-9) was 14th, and Andrew Villalobos (28-9) finished 21st.

Villalobos (14-0) also set a personal best mark to finish 25th in the long jump, as did Pope (15-0) to finish 19th.

Colby Brown had two personal bests with his 26-10 toss for 43rd place in the shot put and a 59-0 effort for 50th place in the discus.

MHS freshman Enrique Villalobos (75-3) also notched a personal best for 43rd place in the discus.

The Bulldogs go to Eureka on Friday, April 19, and then they travel to the Ranchers Invitational on Tuesday, April 30. They finish the regular season here in Winnemucca at the Lowry Invitational on Saturday, May 4.

“Eureka will be another large event with a lot of teams,” Egan concluded. “I think our 4x100 team is going to be looking really good there if we can stay healthy. We have a week off that should do us a lot of good. I sure enjoy this group of boys. They have been very supportive of one another in practice, traveling, and at the meets.”
