Lady Bucks double up on the Dust Devils

The Lowry High School softball team made its way to Dayton last weekend and pounded out a couple of wins against the Dust Devils.

On Friday, the Lady Bucks took an early lead in the first inning scoring three runs and never looked back.

Lowry added two more in each of the next two innings on their way to an 8-2 win.

Kelcey Cooper and Sierra Maestrejuan both had home runs in the game, while Kayleen Urain, Mackenzie Salas-Begay, and Maestrejuan all went 2-for-4 at the plate.

“The girls played well," said LHS coach Austin Mayo. "We put everything together defensively and hit the ball well today. Sierra got us started when she put one over the fence early; that kind of set the tone for the entire series.”

Salas-Begay got the win in the first game, giving up only six hits and two runs to the Dust Devils.

“Mac didn’t have her best stuff, but she threw well enough to only give up two runs,” Mayo said.

On Saturday, Macey Katzenmeyer took over the mound and shut down Dayton with five hits on the way to an 11-3 victory for Lowry.

“Macey hasn’t had a lot of opportunities to pitch this year," Mayo said. "She got into some jams, but got herself out of them and only gave up three runs. Having two solid pitchers going into the playoffs is a huge advantage.”

The Lady Bucks scored four runs in the top of the first and never looked back while pounding out 17 hits against the Dust Devils on Saturday.

Sydney Connors had two home runs for Lowry in the game, and seven of nine players on the team had multiple base hits.

Mayo summed up the weekend by saying, “Dayton is a well-coached team that is not going to give you anything; we earned those two wins.”

Lowry comes home to take on South Tahoe this weekend.

The series starts on Friday at 2 p.m. and concludes with a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Churchill County (Fallon) visits Winnemucca Tuesday, April 16.

Churchill County and Lowry played for the 3A state championship a season ago.

The two schools are battling for playoff spots this year.

“South Tahoe is a team that we should beat, so we are going to come out and try to execute, do what we do against them to try and get the best seed possible going into the playoffs,” Mayo concluded.
