Battle Mountain softball drops three games to Silver Stage

After opening the Northern 2A schedule with five consecutive victories, the Battle Mountain High School softball team suffered its first losses in league play, as Silver Stage swept three games this past week.

Silver Stage won the opening contest 10-3 and swept a double-header on Saturday 10-0 and 6-3 in Battle Mountain.

The first game of the series was scoreless until the third inning, when Silver Stage got on the scoreboard with three runs. Battle Mountain countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, only to see the Nighthawks pull away with six runs in the fourth inning.

Adriana Robles had two of Battle Mountain four hits. Regan Butler and Jenna Leavitt each had one hit. Carlee Peterson, Robles, and Leavitt each scored a run.

Kira Smith suffered the loss in her four innings of work. She allowed nine runs (five earned) on two hits. She struck out five and walked one. Jackie La Riva threw the final two innings and allowed one run on three hits. She struck out three.

Battle Mountain was held to just one hit in the opening game on Saturday and that came from Alma Chavira.

Silver Stage jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings of play and pulled away from there. The Nighthawks added two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings and a single run in the seventh.

Smith and La Riva shared the time in the circle, with La Riva taking the loss. The duo combined for seven strikeouts, with Smith contributing five of those.

Battle Mountain used a single run in the first inning to lead 1-0 in the series finale, but could not hold to the lead.

Silver Stage scored three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 5-2 and held it to the end.

Battle Mountain had 10 hits, four of those by Chavira. The senior also had two RBI. Buller and Destiny Villanueva had two hits apiece.

Smith went the distance in the circle for Battle Mountain but suffered the loss. 

Battle Mountain is back on the road this weekend in West Wendover, starting with a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. The two teams play a double-header on Saturday at 10 a.m.
