Late goals by Spring Creek beat Lowry

The Lowry High School girls soccer team travelled for conference action against Incline and South Tahoe last weekend.

They were unable to muster a goal against either opponent, losing 5-0 to Incline on Friday and 4-0 to South Tahoe on Saturday.

"I’m not quite sure how the score got that bad," said LHS coach Ed Partee about the Incline game. "We were not quite on target on a lot of our shots, we had some miscues. That is part of playing the game, some days you have a good day and some days you don’t.”

Regarding the loss in South Tahoe Partee was pleased with the outing..

“I think the girls had a phenomenal day, to hold that team down to four goals is phenomenal," Partee said "They had great defense and played well together. It’s one of these deals where you have a bad day and then you have an excellent day.”

Lowry hosted Spring Creek on Tuesday and lost 4-2.

The Spartans got on the board early in the first half. However, after an extremely long bonus/injury time session at the end of the first half saw Spring Creek score again, and then Lowry notched two goals of their own to tie the score at 2-2 going into the second half. Hailey Fernandez and Macy Munroe scored for Lowry.

“The girls did well. I think we were just plagued with some pretty bad injuries tonight," Partee said.  "We will see how everybody recovers from this. We have a few days off before our next game.”

Despite numerous saves by Lowry goalie Hannah Growcock, the Spartans tacked on two more goals to secure the victory.

The Lady Bucks are currently in eighth place in the 3A Northern ‘A’ league.

Undefeated South Tahoe (8-0) leads North Tahoe (7-1), Truckee (6-1), Incline (6-3), North Valleys (4-3-1), Spring Creek (2-3-1), and Elko (2-5).

When asked about Lowry’s chances of making the playoffs Partee was still hopeful.

“There is time to get up there and that is what we are working for, so we are going to continue going down that road," Partee said.

The Lady Bucks are now 2-6 in league play and 2-8 overall going into their Oct. 5 home game against Sparks at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, they take on North Valleys at home with a noon start time.

Lowry boys beaten by Spring Creek

Lowry traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday and lost 1-0.

After a scoreless first half, Spartans senior Samuel Claridge notched the only goal of the contest to give Spring Creek the 1-0 victory at home. The loss dropped the Bucks to 3-6 in league play and seventh place in the 3A Northern ‘A’ Division.

“It’s aggravating because the team played really hard and played well, we just couldn’t finish it, we couldn’t get a shot in the net,” said Lowry coach Steve Swanson. “Spring Creek was having the same problem. I thought it was a pretty even game, but they finally snuck one in. We have to get more aggressive on winning the free balls. We let Spring Creek have too many balls that we should be winning. They are not a better team than us; they won the game on a corner kick. If we had won more free balls we would have had more opportunities and one of those would have gone in.”

Undefeated North Valleys (9-0) leads the conference, with Sparks (7-1), Truckee (6-2), North Tahoe (5-3), South Tahoe (4-3-1), and Elko (2-4-1) rounding out the top six.

“Anthony Cuevas played an outstanding game against Spring Creek, and so did Cristian Cuevas," Swanson said "All the guys played well, but those two really stood out.”

The boys have a week off until they travel to Sparks on Oct. 5 and North Valleys on Oct. 6.

“Sparks is tough, that is a tough team," Swanson said. “But, we played them really well on their home field last year; we were winning the game until about ten minutes into the second half. I will be happy if we can play a close game with Sparks. We still have the second half of the season. We have already proven that we can beat Elko, if we can beat Elko, we can beat Spring Creek. We have proven that we can beat Fallon and Incline, and I feel strongly that we can do much better against North Tahoe and Truckee than we did in the first games. I am optimistic about the second half of the season, we are coming along.”
