Lady Bucks split matches with North Valleys, Truckee

The Lowry High School volleyball team won its match at North Valleys last Friday  in four sets to bring its league record to 2-7 in the 3A Northern Division and 5-10 overall.

Lowry beat the Panthers 25-13, 23-25, 25-21, and 25-19 to garner their second league victory of the year.

“North Valleys was a really good win for us," said LHS coach Brandon Eastman. "They are at the same level we are right now. It was competitive the whole match, it wasn’t easy for us. We had to go in there and earn that win.”

North Valleys is in its first year in the Northern 3A, after the Reno school dropped from the Northern 4A this fall.

“The girls came together as a team and they were having fun that day," Eastman said. "They brought a lot of energy. Our bench players supplied energy even when they were not in the game. We are coming together as a team, everyone is buying into what we are trying to do right now.”

On Friday night, Lowry lost three straight sets to the Truckee Lady Wolverines 25-3, 25-9, 25-15.

It was a rematch of the 2017 Northern 3A Regional Championship that Lowry won in five sets. However, eight of those girls on the Lady Bucks' squad from a season ago graduated.

“We responded well on Saturday after what happened on Friday,” Eastman said. “Friday was ugly. Truckee is really good again this year. When you only score three points in a single set you have to hang in there and stay competitive. Even when things were clearly not going our way, we never gave up. Each set we got a little bit closer.”

The Lady Bucks played Friday at home against Spring Creek; results were not available at press time.

It was the first home game since Sept. 8.

"We are excited to finally get to play on our home court a lot now and not have to ride a bus to the game," Eastman said." Seven of our last nine games are at home. We are trying to battle for playoff positioning, we have to have a sense of urgency and pick up a few more wins. I have been impressed that even though we have taken our beatings this year against some teams we have been able to respond. We don’t linger over those losses; we come back the next game and compete a little bit more.”

Lowry hosts Elko today (Saturday) at noon.

The Lady Bucks make their final road trip of the season on Oct. 5 in South Tahoe and Oct. 6 in Dayton.
