The Lowry High School boys soccer team hosted the Incline Highlanders on Friday and handed them an 8-1 drubbing.
Giovanni Sapien scored three goals and Alejandro Martinez had two in the contest. The Buckaroos continued their winning ways Friday after defeating Fallon on the road last week 6-2.
“The boys played well, but we played against a team that has a lot of problems,” coach Steve Swanson said after the game. “They only have 10 guys on their team to begin with, and they are clearly struggling.”
Incline was 0-7 in league play coming into the contest with Lowry.
“But, my guys did what I asked them to do,” Swanson said. “A lot of times we have these kinds of games and the guys play down and that did not happen today. Our counter-attack play was much better; we worked on that really hard this week. I am pleased with the way they played, and I am really looking forward to South Tahoe, I think we are finally going to get those guys tomorrow. We played South Tahoe in our first game and lost 3-5. We made a couple of bad defensive mistakes in that game and I think we are over most of that now. We know we can play with them, and we have never beaten them. We have been close, but I think tomorrow might finally be the day; we are playing well right now. The guys are listening and doing what they are being told to do and they are working really hard, so I am optimistic about tomorrow.”
Despite the coaches’ cautious optimism, the Buckaroos fell to South Tahoe on Saturday 6-0. The Vikings scored two goals in the first half and grabbed another four in the second half while holding Lowry scoreless.
Swanson noted after the loss, “The effort by the boys was good, but the execution was lacking. Great ‘keeping’ kept us off the board.”
The Bucks dropped to 3- 5 in league play and are currently in sixth place in the 3A Northern ‘A’ Division, while South Tahoe went to 4-2-1 on the year and are in the fifth position.
North Valleys (8-0) leads the league, while Sparks (6-1), North Tahoe (5-2), and Truckee (5-2) chase them for a spot in the playoffs. The top five teams in league play go on to compete for the championship.
Lowry junior Gabriel Monreal commented at the game, “This is my second season playing soccer, my dad used to play soccer and he carried it on with me. My favorite part of the game is being out with my teammates.”
The Buckaroos went on the road Tuesday Sept. 25 to take on Spring Creek; results of the match were not available at press time.
The boys travel to Sparks on Friday, Oct. 5 and North Valleys on Saturday, Oct. 6.
They return home on Oct. 9 to host Churchill County (Fallon), North Tahoe on Oct. 12, and Truckee on Oct. 13.
