After struggling out of the gate in its season-opener, the Battle Mountain High School football team has been in cruise control in its last three contests.
That continued this past Friday night, as the Longhorns made the trip east to the Utah/Nevada border to take on West Wendover.
Battle Mountain jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
The advantage jumped to 47-7 at halftime, with the Longhorns outscoring the Wolverines 26-0 in the second quarter. The game was played with a running clock from the second quarter on based on the NIAA 35-point mercy rule.
Cody Ostler ran wild on the West Wendover defense with 221 yards rushing on just 12 carries. He had five touchdowns on the night and had a long run of 73 yards. As a team, Battle Mountain rushed for 289 yards on 25 carries. Roy Chavira had 23 yards rushing and Aldo Castellanos and Kade Quintana each had 18 yards on the ground.
D.J. Martinez was perfect in the air for the Longhorns, as the junior quarterback was 6-of-6 for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Quintana was 1-of-1 passing for 11 yards and a touchdown.
Marcus Jury caught four passes for 84 yards and three touchdowns, including a long of 38 yards. After picking up five touchdowns on the ground, Ostler also caught a pass for an 11-yard touchdown.
Battle Mountain added 16 points in the second half to account for the final score.
The Longhorns are back at home for two consecutive weeks, beginning Friday, against White Pine at 7 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 28, American Falls, Idaho, makes the trip to Battle Mountain for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
