The Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team traveled to Fernley last weekend for their first action of the season.
The Lady Warriors got off to a slow start in their opener against Fernley losing 20-17.
Mia Hernandez led the Winnemucca scoring attack with eight points.
“Fernley is always a tough first game,” said coach DaraLee Millikan. “We played good defense, but we were a little jittery and did not run our offense well. We had many opportunities, but could not get the ball through the hoop. The girls did work very hard, I am proud of their efforts.”
Their second game against Fallon saw WJHS put up a 46-20 tally with much better execution.
“We relaxed, ran the offense, looked for better shot opportunities, and our defense was solid," Millikan said. "We played better as a team, it was the kind of game we know we can play every time.”
Hernandez and Gracie Marchand both scored 11 points, and Megan Cook chipped in eight in the victory.
Winnemucca was scheduled to play at Pyramid Lake on Wednesday.
The Warriors traveled to Carson City on Friday to take on Carson Middle School and Eagle Valley Middle School. Results were not available at press time.
Winnemucca is back on the road today (Saturday) to play in McDermitt at 9 a.m.
