On a warm late summer afternoon in Battle Mountain, it appeared the Battle Mountain girls soccer team was going to grab a victory in its opening league game of the season.

The Lady Longhorns held a 3-2 lead late in the match against Yerington on Friday, only to see the Lions score in extra time off an indirect free kick. Battle Mountain was called for a foul near the box and Yerington quickly got the kick off, as the Lady Longhorns were not set on defense. Yerington made the shot tie the game at 3-3, and that is where it ended.

Battle Mountain jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, as freshman Zerina Ceja moved all the way down the field and through the Yerington defense for the easy goal.

Yerington tied the match two minutes later but Battle Mountain went into halftime up 2-1 after Sruti Bhakta found the net from about 35 yards out in the 25th minute. The senior popped the ball over the Yerington goalie, who was playing way out of the net.

Yerington tied the match at 2-2 in the 58th minute, when Ceja scored her second goal of the day, the same way she scored in the first half.
