Runners from northern Nevada met at the Elko Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Ruby View Golf Course.
Lowry High School used this last opportunity to tune up for their upcoming trip to the regional meet at the end of the month in Reno.
“It was a good day for us,” said Lowry coach Kathy Norcutt. “It was cold, but that is probably a good thing, because it will be cold when we run at regional, so they got a little taste of that.”
In the girls 5,000 meter race, Becca Kuskie with a time of 19 minutes, 55 seconds and Jovi Kuskie (20:13) finished third and fourth, respectively, to represent the Lowry squad in Elko.
Although they are only running as individuals, as five runners are required to register a team score.
Kinsey Albisu (23:44) finished 23rd, and Alethea Houston (24:57) took 32nd.
“Becca ran way more relaxed than last week, she had a really nice race," Norcutt said. "This was Jovi’s first varsity race and she finished well also in fourth place, right behind her sister.”
Lowry’s Will Kracaw ran in third place in the boys 5,000 meter race with a time of 16:55, only 23 seconds behind the winner Jacob Criddle (16:32) of Mountain Home, Idaho. Alex Klekas (16:34) from Elko finished second.
Buckaroo sophomore Jeremy Walker (18:19) grabbed 14th, Christian Olson (18:43) was 18th, Cal Peters (19:55) placed 33rd, and Christopher McGuire (19:56.8) was 35th.
Freshman Tyler J. Morrison (21:59) finished 50th.
The boys squad took the fourth spot with 93 points behind winner Elko (40), Spring Creek (41), and Mountain Home (76).
“I was really excited about the boys race because Will beat George Skivington from Spring Creek,” Norcutt said. “They have been battling back and forth all year.”
The NE Nevada JV championship were held at Spring Creek Thursday, Oct. 18.
“Spring Creek and Elko have huge teams, so coach Malkie in Spring Creek developed that race for the JV kids and varsity runners that are ranked No. 4, 5, and 6 on their teams to give them an opportunity to earn a medal, even though they can’t go to regional," Norcutt said
The Northern 3A Regional Championships will be Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The girls race at 11:10 a.m. and the boys at 1:15 p.m.
“We have this last little push before we go," Norcutt said.."If we keep the intensity up and work hard on our speed, we will do fine.”
