The Lowry High School football team let South Tahoe on the scoreboard first last Friday night, but then turned it on after that and never looked back on their way to another conference win at 32-14.
“We played a pretty good game,” said Lowry coach Taua Cabatbat. “South Tahoe came out and threw the ball on us and we were prepared for that. But, I don’t think we were prepared for their speed and athleticism. We had to make some quick first quarter adjustments and we carried that through the whole game.”
After the Vikings went up 7-0 in the second quarter, Brendan Domire ripped off a 50-yard run to get the Bucks inside the 10 yard-line.
Lowry had to settle for a Julian Esquivel field goal, but then quickly scored a touchdown to grab a 9-7 lead at the half.
“Our guys that we have relied on the whole year stepped up and did some good things tonight," Cabatbat said. "We brought up a few guys from JV because of injuries and they were solid. I ended up playing two of them for three quarters and they contributed in all facets of the game. All of our guys played good football; they overcame the early wave that South Tahoe threw at us.”
Lowry widened its lead in the third quarter, as Domire had a punt return for a touchdown with 7:30 remaining in the quarter. Jace Mentaberry’s extra point kick gave the Buckaroos a 22-7 advantage.
Domire added to the Lowry total with a 4-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and Mentaberry chipped in another extra point to put Lowry up 29-7..
“Our group of seniors have done a great job of leading this team in practice and during games," Cabatbat said. "It was a team win, we did a good job and those JV kids who came up helped out a ton, especially because of all our injuries.”
Another Esquivel field goal and a South Tahoe touchdown made the final tally 32-14 in the Lowry victory.
“Next week we go to Dayton, our goal is to make the playoffs, so we are going to go over there and see what we can do,” Cabatbat said. “If we can get a win there, it might seal our chances of making the playoffs.”
Lowry has not been in the playoffs since 2014.
The Buckaroos (4-3 overall, 3-3 Northern 3A) has won more games this year then the previous three combined. The Buckaroos won a total of three games from 2015-17.
