The Lowry High School boys basketball team dropped its first game of the season, 66-51 in a non-conference meeting against the Reno Huskies on Saturday, Nov. 24, in Reno.
“We had a bad start in that game," said LHS coach Chad Peters. "We ended up down 16 points in the first quarter, but we played it pretty even the rest of the way. We tied them up in the fourth quarter, but we couldn’t finish.”
After the slow start, the Buckaroos hung tough with the 4A school that advanced to the regional semifinals last year.
“Kobe (Stoker) played really well,” Peters said.
Stoker had 15 points for the Buckaroos on the day.
“Brendan (Domire) struggled a little bit this game, but those are our big three, my captains, (Domire, Dorsey Naveran, Stoker)," Peters said. "We expect a lot out of them, and between the three of them, they scored 44 of our 51 points in that game. We did a really good job, once we calmed down a little bit, of getting into our stuff. We can’t bury ourselves early, that is something that we need to focus on not letting happen to us again. As horrible as we were in the first quarter, we still scored 51 points against Reno, but we let them score 66.”
Naveran led Lowry with 17 points, while Domire added eight and Max Mavity had three.
The Buckaroos travel to the Railroad Classic in Sparks this weekend.
The Buckaroos took on Heritage (Littleton, Colo.) on Thursday and results were not available at press time. Lowry continued play in the tournament on Friday and Saturday.
“We are excited to play Littleton, Peters said. “We don’t know very much about them, but it is nice to play new teams. We will play Sparks next and then Lassen, who we have played in the past. It will be a good tournament to see where we are at; then we will have a week to work on things and see where we are.”
The Buckaroos return to action on Friday, Dec. 14, at home against North Valleys at 7:30 p.m.
Lowry hosts Truckee on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2:30 p.m.
“I was really pleased to see some of the younger kids do a nice job of settling down and knowing their roles in the first game of the year,” Peters concluded.
