Lowry's Cuevas notches first-team, all-league honors

Lowry High School junior Anthony Cuevas was nominated to a first-team, all-league spot as a utility player in the Northern 3A boys soccer division for his performance in the 2018 season.

Cuevas also made Second Team All-State. Buckaroo Alex Herrera was voted second-team, all-league. 

North Tahoe’s Michael Callejas was crowned the League MVP, and Jose Espina from Sparks received the coach of the year honors. Sparks finished 16-1-1 in league play and 18-5-2 overall in 2018.

They defeated Yerington 8-0 in the first round of the playoffs, and Fernley 7-1 in the second round. North Valleys handed the Railroaders a 1-0 loss, and they lost a 3-2, two overtime thriller to Western in Las Vegas to end their season. 

The 3A first-team, all-state team was comprised of North Tahoe’s Michael Callejas and Benito Gonzalez, Sparks’ Cesar Hernandez and Alexes Cabrera, North Valleys’ Bryan Morales and Erick Gonzalez, and Kyle Haimbruch from Fernley. 

Joining Cuevas on the Second Team All-State squad were North Tahoe’s Koby Mattson and Andres Cerda, as well as Patrick Sullivan from Truckee, Giovanni Lopez from Sparks, Andrew Carrillo from North Valleys, and West Wendover’s Omar Corana. 

The first-team, all-league squad was also comprised of four North Tahoe players, Andres Cerda, Benito Gonzalez, Michael Callejas, and Koby Mattson. They were joined by North Valleys’ Andrew Carrillo, Bryan Morales, and Erick Gonzalez. Sparks brought an additional three players to the team, with Cesar Hernandez, Giovanni Lopez, and Alexes Cabrera all making the cut. Patrick Sullivan from Truckee rounded out the first team. 

The second-team, all-league nominees that joined Herrera were Nick Rae and Gus Resa Islas from Truckee, North Valleys’ Luis Chavez and Josh Guerra, Cesar Molina and Oscar Garcia from Fallon, South Tahoe’s Nic Sanchez and Oscar Marzollo, as well as Jorge Landeros from Elko, Garett Whimple from Spring Creek, and Christian Quezada from North Tahoe. 

The Buckaroos finished the season with a 4-13-1 overall record and missed out on the playoffs.
