The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade boys basketball team  won all three of its games and the eighth-graders won its only contest at Winnemucca Junior High School on Saturday, Nov. 17, in their only home games of the season.

The eighth-grade squad beat Pershing County Middle School (Lovelock) 41-3, after winning by 20 in Reno against Clayton Middle School on Thursday.

WJHS seventh-grade coach Sean Millikan spoke about the previous game last Thursday

“We lost by 30 points to Clayton in Reno," Millikan said. "We shot about 14 percent from the field. The boys played their hearts out, but you can’t win without hitting shots.”

On Saturday, the WJHS seventh-graders were victorious over Pyramid Lake 43-24, McDermitt 23-11 and Pershing County 33-4. The boys held Lovelock scoreless in the game until the fourth quarter.

Vanesa Diaz was a fan at the games on Saturday.

“I came to watch my nephew Anthony Guzman," Diaz said. "He is a seventh grader and they are playing three games today. I love basketball because it is a great opportunity for kids to develop their skills, learn what they need to know in order to play in high school, college, and maybe do something better with themselves. My favorite player of all time is Kobe Bryant. I know that he (Kobe) thought that he was really awesome, but he did a lot for his team; he made a lot of points.”

Millikan was pleased with the way his team played.

“It was good for the kids to get wins today to help them gain confidence," added the coach. "We showed a lot of improvement today. Michael (Campos) shot and played well for us. But more importantly, he was very supportive and he played as a good teammate. We play again in two weeks in Lovelock and the week after that we go to Reno one more time for our last game."
