The Winnemucca Junior High School boys basketball teams hit the road last weekend and racked up more wins before returning for their only home stand of the season.
The eighth grade squad secured four more wins.
The Warriors downed Pyramid Lake 44-10, Lovelock eighth grade 48-11, Lovelock seventh grade 53-14, and Elko 31-27.
“We had Pyramid Lake outmatched, so we just ran our offense and sat back in a zone defense; we did not pressure them too much," said WJHS eighth-grade coach Byron Jeppsen, "On Saturday, at Elko we were missing a lot of kids, so we moved up two seventh-graders to play with us. It was the same team that we beat a couple of weeks ago, and we beat them again, but it was a much closer game this time. We are doing really well this season, they are fun kids to coach."
Justin Scott is a player on the eighth-grade team and noted defense is his strong suit.
"I’ve been playing basketball since the third grade," said WJHS eighth-grader Justin Scott. "It is a team sport that I can play with my friends. I like playing defense because I can contribute there while my teammates focus on offense. We are doing pretty well this year; we have beaten a couple of 4A schools like Eagle Valley and Elko. We lost our only game of the year to Carson, but it was a close game; we just had an off day when we played them.”
The WJHS seventh graders won three-out-of four games. The only loss was to the Spring Creek eighth-grade squad 34-17, bringing its season record to 5-5.
“We played really well last weekend, but those Spring Creek kids were very big and physical; my boys did their best, but it was hard," said WJHS seventh grade coach Sean Millikan. "We had a good team effort. This weekend at home I expect to get three wins, we should play well.”
On Saturday, the Warriors will host their only home games of the season, in the Bi-County Tournament starting at 9 a.m. at WJHS.
“I like how basketball can be slow and fast. Shooting and playing defense are my favorite parts of the game," said WJHS seventh-grader Dempsey Jenkins.
