Winnemucca personal trainer Erica Cowan travelled to Reno on Nov. 3 to compete in the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) American Iron Championship.

She won her division in her first-ever competition.

“There were 46 lifters total and four in my weight class,” Cowan said. “This was my first competition, but I have been lifting for three years. I got into power lifting because I have always been competitive in sports, and this was my way of continuing to compete. I started it to get curves, but I fell in love with lifting heavy and being able to out lift most men. That is kind of cool.”

Cowan will compete in Reno again in April at the same venue.

“I plan to keep going until my body can’t take it anymore,” Cowan concluded. “I want to give a special thank you to my gym, The Fitness Zone. Everyone there has been awesome to me.”
