The rookies, the juniors and the seniors of the Winnemucca Youth Football League all made it to the finals in last weekend’s Third Annual Battle Born Football Classic.
The Winnemucca Seniors defeated the Elko Seminoles 18-14 in the final game of the tournament to win the title for the second year in a row.
The Battle Born Buckaroo juniors fell to the Spring Creek Titans 41-0, while the rookie Winnemucca Gold squad dropped their championship game to the Spring Creek Drillers 25-0.
Rookie Winnemucca Gold coach Scott Santos commented after his team lost to the Drillers,
“Spring Creek has a really good football team. Our guys never got down on themselves; they played hard every single play," Santos said. "They showed a lot of character today. They should be proud of getting to the championship game. We had a talented rookie age group this year; Winnemucca brought two teams to this tournament. To spread our talent out like this to two teams and still be competitive really shows how talented this age group is. This year we worked with the kids on being good teammates, showing good character, and sportsmanship. These kids responded positively and represented themselves, their town, and their families really well.”
The Rookie Division is for boys 8 and 9 years old, the Junior Division is for boys 10 and 11 years old, and the Senior Division kids are 12, 13, 14 years old.
The tournament was sponsored by the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority, and Compressor Pump and Service from Elko.
