CARSON CITY — The Battle Mountain High School track and field team finished out its season in style with three individual titles this past weekend at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships at Carson High School in Carson City.
Eddie Morfin was dominant in the throwing events all season and it paid off for the senior with double state championships.
Morfin outdistanced the field by more than two feet in the shot put, with a personal best throw of 47 feet, 7.25 inches. The Meadows’ Shahzaib Akbar was his nearest competitor at 45-1.25.
It wasn’t nearly as close in the discus, as Morfin unleashed a personal-best throw of 140-9 to beat Yerington’s JayDan Vasquez (122-11) by nearly 18 feet.
Cameron Thompson paced a 1-2 Battle Mountain finish in the pole vault. Thompson cleared the bar at 11-6 and teammate Payton Ayers was second at 11-3, a personal best mark for the senior. In addition, Ayers was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 42-6.75.
Senior Jesse Edgar was third in the shot put at 43-6.25, as three Longhorns finished in the top four. Edgar was fourth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 508. Yerington’s Donovan Coplin won the event at 6 feet. White Pine’s Saxtyn Brewster and Calvary Chapel’s Blake Box were second and third, respectively, each clearing 5-11.
Izaak Stahl finished sixth in the high jump at 5-8. Sophomore Cody Ostler placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 39-9 and eighth in the long jump at 17-4.50.
The 4x100 relay of Michael Ingraham, Ayers, Austin Wilkins and Ostler were fourth in a time of 46.58 seconds. Yerington won the race with a time of 45.54 and White Pine was second at 45.63.
The 4x200 relay of Wilkins, Stahl, Powell and Ostler were fifth with a time of 1:37.23. Pershing County claimed the state title at 1:33.62 and Lake Mead (1:34.32) was second.
The Longhorns were fifth as a team with 70 points. White Pine won the state championship with 123 points and Yerington (106) was second. Lincoln County (85) and Pershing County (73) were third and fourth, respectively.
On the girls side, senior Jade Smith brought home a state championship in the pole vault for the Lady Longhorns. The senior set a personal best mark of 8-3 to win the event by three inches over Incline’s Belle Johnson. In addition, Smith was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 29-0.
Freshman Brooke Ripley set a personal best in the triple jump and finished third with a mark of 30-6.50. White Pine’s Lily Fulmer won the event with a jump of 33-6 and Democracy Prep’s Azalia Pitts was second at 30-11.50.
Senior Esma Cheno placed sixth in the discus with a personal-best throw of 91-50. White Pine’s Emma Boren won the state title with a throw of 106-7 and Yerington’s Josie Mattice was second at 100-50.
The Battle Mountain girls were ninth as a team with with 26 points. White Pine ran away with the team championship with 176 points. Yerington and North Tahoe tied for second with 84 points. Pershing County (64) and Incline (63) rounded out the top five.
