Battle Mountain’s Eddie Morfin paced the Battle Mountain High School track and field team with a pair of victories in the throwing events at the Northern 2A Regional Championships last weekend in Yerington.

The Longhorns completed a 1-2-3 finish in the shot put, as Morfin led the way with a throw of 46 feet, 3.50 inches. Jesse Edgar was second with a personal-best toss of 43-9 and Payton Ayers was third at 43-1.

Morfin also topped the field in the discus with a throw of 123-6, while teammates Tristin Cordingley (105-4) and Edgar (104-11, personal best) were seventh and eighth, respectively. Cordingley also placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 37-10, for a personal best.

Cameron Thompson and Ayers qualified for the state championships in the pole vault. Thompson had a mark of 11-6 to win the event by a foot. Ayers was second at 10-6.

Sophomore Cody Ostler is headed to the state meet in the triple jump and long jump. Ostler was the runner-up in the triple jump at 38-5.50 and third in the long jump at 17-9.50, which was a season-best for him this year.

The 4x100 relay of Michael Ingraham, Ayers, Austin Wilkins and Ostler qualified for state with a second-place finish in a time of 46.75. Wilkins, Izaak Stahl, DeAndre Powell and Ostler were fourth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:39.38.

Edgar and Stahl qualified for the state championships in the high jump. Edgar set a personal best, clearing the bar at 5-8 to place third. Stahl was fourth at 5-6 and DeAndre Powell just missed out, finishing fifth at 5-6. Stahl added a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 55.45.

Michael Ingraham was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (20.59 seconds), fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (50.15) and seventh in the 100-meter dash (12.59). Stahl placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 27-4.75.

Ryan Manning was sixth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8-6, Isaiah Powell was seventh in the long jump at 16-8.50 and Michael Malone placed ninth in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:19.30.

The Battle Mountain boys were third in the team standings with 130 points. Yerington (160) and North Tahoe (140.50) were first and second, respectively. Pershing County (110), Incline (71) and Silver Stage (54.5) rounded out the team scores.

On the girls side, Brooke Ripley and Jade Smith were first and second in the triple jump. Ripley had a personal-best mark of 29-7 and Smith had a season-best throw of 29-6.

Smith qualified for the state meet in the pole vault at a personal-best mark of 7-6 and Hania Amezcua also qualified at 6-0. Smith added a fifth-place finish at 13-0.50 and the senior was fifth in the 100-meter hurdle in a time of 20.13. Ripley placed eighth in the 100-meter dash at 14.30.

Senior Esma Cheno qualified for the state championships with a personal-best toss of 88-6 to finish second. She was eighth in the shot put with a toss of 26-2.50.

Mary Wolters placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 27-8 and she was 11th in the discus at 66-6. Anahi Lopez was 13th in the shot put (21-5) and 14th in the discus (49-1). Kailee Wolters placed 11th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.89 and the freshman was 12th in the 100-meter dash in a personal-best time of 14.91.

The 4x100 relay of Lopez, Mary Wolters, Kailee Wolters and Ripley were fifth in a time of 58.20.

The Lady Longhorns were fifth in the team standings with 57 points. Yerington led the way with 165 points. North Tahoe (135), Pershing County (109) and Incline (97)- were second, third and fourth.

The NIAA 2A State Championships begin Friday at 3 p.m. at Carson High School in Carson City. The action resumes at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
