The Lowry High School track and field team will have a strong contingent of athletes at this weekend’s NIAA State Track and Field Championships at Carson High School in Carson City.
The Buckaroos won five regional titles this past weekend in Yerington.
Rachel Garrison swept the throwing events for the Lady Bucks. She won the discus with a toss of 110 feet, 2 inches and the shot put at 34-0.
Her older sister, Shelby Garrison set a personal-best in the 400 meters with a time of 60.09 seconds to win the race and beat teammate Hailey Hinkle by .81 seconds. The older Garrison also qualified for the state meet in the high jump with a second-place finish as she cleared the bar at 5-2.. Hinkle collected a victory for herself in the 300-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 46.11.
The 4x400 relay of Asia Bengochea, Hailey Fernandez, Hinkle and Shelby Garrison won the race with a time of 4:08.66.
Becca Kuskie qualified for the state championships in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. The sophomore set personal-best times in both events. She was second in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:20.82 and third in the 3,200 meters at 11:42.45. Heather Hall is headed to Carson City in the shot put after a throw of 31-4.
The 4x200 relay of Shelby Garrison, Fernandez, Julianna Gonzalez and Bengochea were second with a time of 1:48.20.
The Lady Bucks finished third as a team with 105 points. Spring Creek narrowly beat out Truckee 131.5-129.5 for the team championship.
A handful of Lowry boys are also going to Carson City.
Erick Lopez turned in a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.38) and the senior was third in the 200 meters (23.25).
Scottie Smith was second in the high jump with a mark of 5-10 and Bryan Day (11-6) and Colby Terry (11-0) were second and third in the pole vault. Terry set a personal best with his mark.
Timur Krapivin made his way into the state meet with a third-place finish in the 400 meters in a time of 54.20.
The Buckaroo boys will have three relay teams competing in Carson City. The 4x100 relay of Jace Mentaberry, Jacob Frazier, Krapivin and Lopez were third at 44.79. The same foursome were third in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:34.08. The 4x800 relay of Brandon lee, Hunter Albisu, Sam Roth and Will Kracaw were third with a time of 8:37.82.
The Lowry boys were fourth as a team with 94 points. Churchill County won the regional title with 122 points. Truckee (114) and Elko (103) were second and third, respectively.
The NIAA State Track and Field Championships get underway at 3 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday at Carson High School.
