Regional playoffs begin this week in northern Nevada

Regional playoffs begin this week in northern Nevada

The final regional championships of the school year gets underway this week throughout northern Nevada.

The Lowry High School softball team (21-3) earned the No. 2 seed in the Northern 3A Regional Championships, which starts Thursday at Churchill County High School in Fallon.

Lowry will play the winner of Churchill County and Spring Creek at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Greenwave and Spartans play in the first round at 11:30 a.m. If the Lady Bucks win their opening game, they would play at 2 p.m. on Friday. A loss means Lowry plays at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.

Dayton and Elko open the tournament on Thursday at 9 a.m. and the winner plays Fernley at 2 p.m.

The tournament runs through Saturday in Fallon. For a complete bracket, visit www.niaa.com.

The Northern 3A baseball tournament is in Fallon as well. Elko (18-6) and Churchill County (17-7) are the top two seeds and received first-round byes.

South Tahoe and Dayton open the tournament at 9 a.m. on Thursday and the winner plays Elko at 2 p.m. Truckee and Dayton face off at 11:30 a.m. and the winner plays Churchill County at 4:30 p.m.

Games start back up on Friday at 9 a.m. and run throughout the day. The championship is set for Saturday.

The two teams in the softball and baseball regional championship game qualify for the NIAA 3A State Championships to be played at Reno High School from May 17-19.

Battle Mountain hosts 2A baseball/softball

Battle Mountain will be the site for the Northern 2A Regional baseball and softball championships on Friday and Saturday.

On the baseball side, Yerington and Incline play at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and North Tahoe and West Wendover play at 1 p.m. The winners of the two games play at 6 p.m. on Friday and the losers plat at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

The loser’s bracket game takes place on Saturday at 10 a.m. and the championships is set for 12:30 p.m. If needed, a second title game will be played 30 minutes after.

Pershing County id the No. 1 seed in the softball tournament and will play Yerington at 9 a.m. on Friday. White Pine and Silver Stage meet in the other semifinal at 11:30 a.m.

The losers of the opening games are back on the field at 2 p.m. and the winners play at 4:30 p.m. The loser’s bracket game is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday and the championship will be at 12:30 p.m. If needed, a second title game will be played 30 minutes later.

It is an NIAA event and booster cards will not be accepted. Admission prices are $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens 62 and older are $3. Children 8 and younger are free.

Regional track set

The Northern 1A/2A/3A Regional Track and Field Championships will take place Friday and Saturday at Yerington High School in Yerington. The competition begins at 2 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The top four finishers in each event in the 1A and 2A advance to the state championships. The top three finishers in the 3A qualify for the state championships.

Like the baseball and softball championships, the track and regional meet is is an NIAA event and booster cards will not be accepted. Admission prices are $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens 62 and older are $3. Children 8 and younger are free.

The NIAA State Championships will take place May 18-19 at Carson High School in Carson City.

Carson hosts swimming regional championships

The Northern 3A/4A Regional Swimming Championships will take place Friday and Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility. Competition begins at 2 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The top three finishers in each event qualifies for the NIAA 3A State Swimming Championships on Saturday, May 19, in Las Vegas.

The Northern 2A boys golf regional championship took place on Tuesday at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley. Results were not available at press time.

The top three finishing teams and top five individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to the NIAA 2A State Championships in Boulder City on May 16-17.

Lowry High School will head to Pahrump and Mountain Falls Golf Club for the NIAA 3A Boys Golf State Championship on May 14-15.
