The Battle Mountain High School track and field team closed out the regular season in a big way with a strong performance at the Lowry Invitational this past Saturday in Winnemucca.
Senior Eddie Morfin took home the top spot in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 9 inches and was third in the discus at 127-0. Fellow senior Cameron Thompson was the runner-up in the pole vault, as he cleared the bar at 12-3, for a personal best.
Payton Ayers (44-3) and Jesse Edgar (40-10) were second and third in the shot put, while Ayers was ninth in the pole vault with a mark of 8-6. In addition, Edgar was fourth in the high jump, along with teammate DeAndre Powell, who had the same 5-6 mark.
Izaak Stahl set a personal best in the triple jump to finish second at 39-0 and Cody Ostler was third in the triple jump with a leap of 38-3. Stahl added 10th-place finish in the high jump at 5-4.
Isaiah Powell paced Battle Mountain in the long jump, finishing sixth with a personal-best jump of 17-11. Ostler was seventh in the event with a leap of 17-8 and DeAndre Powell was 12th at 17-1.
Sophomore Micheal Ingraham finished 10th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 20.94 seconds and 11th in the 300-meter hurdles at 49.28. Both times were personal bests for him. Daegan McClary placed 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 59.71 and he was 23rd in the 200 meters with a personal best at 26.71.
Declan McClary placed 12th in the 3,200 meters in a time of 13:43.14 and was 25th in the 1,600 meters with a time of 2:37.60. Austin Wilkins finished 12th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.24 and 13th in the 200 meters at 25.16.
The 4x100 relay of Ingraham, Ayers, Wilkins and Ostler were fourth in a time of 47.67. Stahl, DeAndre Powell, Wilkins and Ostler were fifth in the 4x200 relay at 1:39.05. The 4x800 relay of Thompson, Michael Malone, Ryan Manning and Isaiah Powell were sixth at 9:47.94.
Battle Mountain was fourth in the team standings with 74 points. Elko won the team title with 131 points and Churchill County (130.50) was second. Lowry finished third with 112.50 points.
On the girls side, Jade Smith was fourth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 7-0. The senior placed seventh in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 14-1. She set another personal best in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 20.34 and she was 10th in the triple jump at 29-2.
Mary Wolters and Esma Chemo led the Battle Mountain throwers. Wolters set a personal best in the shot put to place fifth with a throw 29-6. She set another personal best in the discus at 79-4 to place eighth. In addition, Wolters was 17th in the 100-meter dash at 14.53. Chemo had personal bests in the shot put (27-0) to place eight and seventh in the discus at 84-0.
Hania Amezcua placed seventh in the pole vault at 6-6 and Brooke Ripley placed 12th in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 28-11. Jasmine Lopez was 16th in the shot put with a throw of 23-9 and 17th in the discus at 68-11.
The 4x100 relay of Anahi Lopez, Kailee Wolters, Ripley and Mary Wolters were sixth with a time of 58.17.
The Battle Mountain girls were seventh in the team standings with 19.50 points. Elko claimed the team title with 197 points and Churchill County (119) and Lowry (102) were second and third, respectively.
The Longhorns travel to Yerington this weekend for the Northern 2A Regional Championships. The top four finishers in each event advance to the state championships on May 18-19 in Carson City.
