For the first time this year, the Lowry High School track and field team did not have to board a bus in the early morning hours and head for a meet.
The Buckaroos closed out the regular season at home this past Saturday with its annual invitational that featured 11 teams from northern Nevada.
Both squads finished third in the team standings, as Elko and Churchill County were first and second in both the boys and girls; divisions.
For the Lady Bucks, junior Rachel Garrison bounced back and won both throwing events. She had a toss of 117 feet, 2 inches in the discus to win by nearly eight feet. She set a personal record in the shot put with a throw of 36-11.50 to clear the field by four feet.
Shelby Garrison and Hailey Hinkle shared the high jump title, as both seniors cleared the bar a 5-0. Hinkle also won the 400 m meters with a time of 1 minute, 1.50 seconds, beating out Dayton’s Rebecca Mason (1:02.01). That was the quickest time for Hinkle this year. Garrison was second in the 200 meters with a time of 26.98, coming up .07 seconds short at the finish line to Churchill County’s Kyndal Collins (26.91).
Becca Kuskie set two personal record on the day, winning the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:23.37. She was second in the 800 meters at 2:33.52. She normally runs the 3,200 meters as well but skipped the event.
Heather Hall turned in two third-place finishes in the throwing events. She set a personal best in the discus with a toss of 103-11 and she had a throw of 32-1.50 in the shot put. Lily Pasquale set a personal best in the long jump to finish sixth at 14-2. The junior was seventh in the 300-meter hurdles at 55-89 and 14th in the triple jump with a mark of 27-11.
Michelle Rookstool was eight in the pole vault at 6-0 and freshman Kinsey Albisu was 10th in the 1,500 meters (6:21.84) and 10th in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:50.43. Lucero Ruiz placed 12th in the 100-meters dash at 14.32 and was 14th in thew 200 meters and freshman Alethea Houston was 13th in the 100 meters and 200 meters.
The 4x400 relay of Pasquale, Hailey Fernandez, Hinkle and Shelby Garrison won with a time of 4:12.13.
On the boys side, Bryan Day set a personal best in the long jump to win the event with a leap of 19-7. The senior was third in the pole vault with another personal best of 11-6. All five of Lowry’s pole vaulters set a personal best. Lao Aguilar was second at 11-0, Colby Terry (10-6) was sixth, Sean Betz (9-6) was seventh and Robert Shoenecker (7-6) was 13th. In addition, Day placed eighth in the triple jump with a personal best of 36-10.50.
Will Kracaw paced the field in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:27. 48, while teammates Dylan Nee (12:57.25) and Christopher McGuire (12.59.55) were 10th and 11th, respectively.
Erick Lopez was second in the 100- meter dash with a time of 11.36 and was the runner-up in the 200 meters as well at 23.24. Scottie Smith was second in the high jump, as he cleared the bar at 5-8 and the junior was 15th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.24.
Timur Krapivin (54.93), Sam Roth (55.81, personal best), Brandon Lee (58.51) and Celso Ruiz (58.84, personal best) were fifth, sixth, eighth and 10th in the 400 meters. Krapivin was 12th in the 200 meters at 24.81. Lee added a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.91.
Jasper Glasgow (38-10.50, personal best) and Eddie Sanchez (38-10, personal best) were seventh and eighth in the shot put and Glasgow was ninth in the discus with a toss of 120-5 for another personal best. Sanchez placed 11th in the discus with a throw of 116-1.
Jace Mentaberry was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and Jacob Frazier placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.36 and was seventh in the 200 meters at 24.35. Austin Nelson (18-4, personal best), Dalton Irons (17-6, personal best), Colton DeLamora (17-3) and Jeremiah Good (17-2, personal best) were fifth, eighth, 10th and 11th in the long jump.
The 4x100 relay of Mentaberry, Frazier, Krapivin and Lopez were second with a time of 45.39. The same foursome were second in the 4x200 relay at 1:32.57. The 4x800 relay of Lee, Hunter Albisu, Roth and Kracaw were second at 8:40.16.
Lowry is in Yerington this weekend for the Northern 3A Regional Championships. The top three finishers in each event qualifies for the NIAA 3A State Championships in Carson City on May 18-19.
