The Lowry High School track and field team completed its final road trip of the regular season last Saturday at the Bob Shaffer Classic in Truckee, Calif.
Senior Hailey Hinkle took home the high jump crown as she cleared the bar at 5-0 feet. Hinkle also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.22 seconds. She was the highest finishing 3A runner, as the two top runners were from McQueen.
Rachel Garrison earned the runner-up spot in the discus with a toss of 116 feet, 3 inches. Erica Grotegeer from Weatland, Calif., won the event with a throw of 146-9. Garrison, a junior, was third in the shot put at 31-5 and was the highest finishing 3A thrower.
Her older sister, Shelby Garrison, was third in the high jump at 4-10, while Heather Hall posted two fourth-place finishes in the throwing events. Hall had a toss of 95-8 in the discus and 29-0.50 in the shot put.
Becca Kuskie placed third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:36.52. The McQueen duo of Madelyn Shipman (5:36.42) and Imogen Olvera (5:36.45) were first and second, respectively. Kuskie ran the 800 meters at 2:38.22 and was sixth.
Sophomore Julianna Gonzalez was eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 28.04 and was 10th in the 100-meter dash at 13.82.
Lucero Ruiz finished 10th in the long jump with a leap of 13-5.50 and the senior was 19th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.87. Freshman Aletha Houston posted a personal best in the 100-meter dash to finish 17th at 14.56 and she was 17th in the 200 meters at 29.99.
Kinsey Albisu was 17th in the 1,600 meters in a time of 6:20.06 and the freshman ran the 800 meters at 3:00.86. Lesley Martinez was 23rd in the discus (61-1) and 27th in the shot put with a throw of 21-1.75.
The 4x200 relay of Shelby Garrison, Hailey Fernandez, Gonzalez and Adia Bengochea were second with a time of 1:50.73. Galena of the Northern 4A was first at 1:49.94 and Sacred Heart Cathedral out of California was third at 1:51.19. Truckee was the closest 3A team at 1:54.78.
McQueen won the girls team title with 174 points and Truckee was second at 112. Galena (93), Sacred Heart Cathedral (71) and Lowry (64) rounded out the top five.
On the boys side, senior Erick Lopez placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.69 and he was fifth in the 100-meter dash at 11.69. Fellow senior, Bryan Day was third in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 10-6. Teammate Colby Terry was sixth in the pole vault at 10-0 and Sean Betz and Eduardo Aguilar tied for seventh with a mark of 9-0. Day also placed 12th in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 36-2.50 and he was 22nd in the long jump at 16-10.50.
Scottie Smith continued his strong season in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-8 to finish fourth. Jacob Frazier was sixth in the 200 meters in a time of 24.17 and the senior was 15th in the 100-meter dash at 12.09. Will Kracaw notched a fifth-place finish in the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:54.24.
Sophomore Timur Krapvin was eighth in the 400 meters at 54.90 and 16th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.83. Fellow sophomore, Jasper Glasgow paced the Buckaroo boys in the throwing events. He was seventh in the discus with a toss of 104-9 and 11th in the shot put at 36-6.50.
Julian Fimbers (5:19.62) and Hunter Albisu (5:21.36) were 20th and 21st in the 1,600 meters and Sam Roth was 21st in the 400 meters with a time of 57.38, a personal best for the freshman.
The 4x200 relay of Jace Mentaberry, Frazier, Krapvin and Lopez were third with a time of 1:36.65 and the 4x800 relay of Brandon Lee, Albisu, Roth and Kracaw were fourth at a time of 8:32.08. The 4x100 relay of Mentaberry, Frazier, Krapvin and Lopez were fourth at 45.91.
The Lowry boys were sixth as a team with 52.2 points. McQueen was the team champion with 146.6 points and Galena was second at 94.1 points. Reno (88), Churchill County (80) and Sacred Heart Cathedral (66) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Lowry closes out the regular season on Saturday at home at 9 a.m.
The Northern 3A Regional Championships take place May 11-12 at Yerington High School. The top three placers in each event qualify for the state championships.
The NIAA 3A State Championships will be held May 18-19 at Carson High School in Carson City.
