The Lowry High School track and field team finally got some decent weather to compete in last Saturday at the Fallon Elks Invitational.
Rachel Garrison showed she will be a threat in the discus again this spring, winning the event with a throw of 113 feet, 2 inches. She defeated Douglas’ Meleeah McKown by over three feet. Garrison also competed in the shot put but did not record a legal throw.
Hailey Hinkle took home the top spot in the high jump at 5 feet and was second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.12 seconds. McQueen’s Ashlyn Hedrick won the race at 49.33.
“It was a good race,” said LHS coach Grant Beatty. “They will probably see each other again this weekend.”
Shelby Garrison collected a runner-up finish in the high jump at 5-0 but Hinkle beat her out on fewer missed attempts. In addition, the senior was fourth in the 200 meters at 27.71. The top three finishers in the 200 meters were from Northern 4A schools.
Becca Kuskie continued her strong start to the season, placing second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:55.59. Wooster’s Eliana Ornelas won the race with a time of 11:45.06. The junior was fourth in the 1,600 meters at 5:32.64. The top three finishers were from 4A schools.
“Becca has had a great spring,” said assistant coach Kathy Norcutt. “She ran two great races and is right at the top of the 3A rankings.”
Heather Hall was 10th in the discus with a toss of 90-3, a personal best, and Julianna Gonzalez was 12th in the 200 meters in a time of 28.35. Hailey Fernandez placed 14th in the 100-meter dash at 13.92 and was 17th in the 200 meters at 28.67.
The Lady Bucks were fifth as a team with 53 points and were the highest finishing 3A school. McQueen took home the team title with 95 points and Reed (82) was second. Douglas (63) and Damonte Ranch (58) were third and fourth, respectively.
“It was a pretty strong performance for us,” Beatty said. “It will be one of the best track meets we will be in all year. We are still trying to get healthy on the girls side and they will get better.”
On the boys side, senior Erick Lopez was second in the 200 meters with a time of 23.72. Churchill County’s Drake Copley beat him out by .10 seconds at the finish line. Lopez was sixth in the 100 meter dash at 11.64. Copley also won that race at 11:28.
Scottie Smith finished sixth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-8 and Will Kracaw was 10th in the 1,600 meters (4:46.38) and 15th in the 3,200 meters (10:46.17). Colby Terry was 13th in the pole vault with a leap of 10-0.
Jacob Frazier finished ninth in the 200 meters in a time of 24.12 and the was 12th in the 100-meter dash at 11.84 and Jace Mentaberry was 16th in the 300-meter hurdles at 46.27.
The 4x200 relay of Raymond Orzech, Frazier, Timur Krapvin and Lopez were fifth with a time of 1:38.52 and the 4x100 relay of Orzech, Frazier, Krapvin and Lopez were ninth at 47.07.
The Buckaroo boys scored 16.5 points to place 12th. Reed ran away with the team title with 149 points and Spanish Springs was second with 91 points. Churchill County and Damonte Ranch tied for third with 50 points and Galena (44) was fifth.
Lowry competes at High Desert Invitational
The younger members of the Lowry track and field team were at McQueen High School on Friday, March 23, for the High Desert Frosh/Soph Invitational.
Freshman Alesha Houston placed 16th in the discus with a throw of 53-3 and was 24th in the shot put at 15-6. Fellow freshman Lesley Martinez was 17th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.97 and she added a 22nd-place outing in the long jump with a leap of 10-6.
On the boys side, sophomore Jasper Glasgow was fourth in the discus with a toss of 96-2 and 12th in the shot put at 22-5.
Chris Esparaza (12:04.28) and Dylan Nee 12:04.94) were eight and ninth in the 3,200 meters, while Octavio Ruiz (12:11.94) and Kylen Timko (13:22.56) were 13th and 18th, respectively, in the 3,200 meters.
Dominic Hill placed 14th in the shot put with a throw of 32-8 and Jeremiah Good (71-10) and Hill (71-8) were 17th and 18th in the shot put.
The Buckaroos split their teams up again this weekend, sending a squad to Elko on Friday. A handful of athletes will be in Reed on Friday and Saturday for the Reed Rotary Invitational.
