It was one of the largest track meets of the season.
Pershing County traveled to Fallon on Saturday for the 46th annual Elks Invitational. Thirty-five teams leaped, raced and threw under sunny but cold skies.
Jason Allen, Dave McLean, and Lance Condie coach Pershing’s track and field team.
For the boys, JC Astle, Owen Bake, Martin Cholico, Lane Condie, Victor Flores, Emilio Gomez, Zeke Jackson, Davis Murphy, Scott Plimpton, Raul Rincon, Juan Rosas, Brandon Zile and Cody Zile competed.
“To me, the highlight of the day was Lane (Condie) and Emilio (Gomez) running the hurdles,” said Allen. “Emilio placed sixth in the 300 hurdles. Lane finished sixth in the 110s. To do that well in such a big meet was awesome.”
The Pershing County girls included Pati Carapia, Kaelyn Castro, Jennifer Chandler, Cheyeanne Diaz, Faith Happy, Maile Kauvaka, Connie Kersnowski, Leeann McNeff, Kaelyn Montes, Alyssa Montes, Megan Renfroe, Kyle’ Tupa and Liddia Weatherman.
Condie, Gomez, Bake and Cody Zile buddied up for the 4x200 relay. Condie, Gomez, Bake and Brandon Zile raced in the 4x400 relay. Scott Plimpton, Zeke Jackson, JC Astle and Raul Rincon teamed up for the 4x 800.
The girls competed in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Kaelyn Castro, Alyssa Montes, Connie Kersnowski and Megan Renfroe ran the 4x100. Kyle’ Tupa, Pati Carapia, Cheyeanne Diaz and Connie Kersnowski ran the 4 X 400 race.
Allen summed up a few more standouts.
“Megan (Renfroe) taking sixth in the 400-meter dash and Owen (Bake) making the finals in the triple jump was exciting for us coaches,” said Allen. “It wasn’t just those top performers though. All the kids worked hard, and we’re proud of how they competed.”
On April 13 the track team competes in the Fernley Invitational at Fernley High School.
