Battle Mountain golfers finish second in West Wendover

The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team traveled to West Wendover on Wednesday, March 14, for the Wolverine golf tournament.

The Longhorns’ Brody Young finished with the third lowest score in the competition.

“I was so proud of our guys toughing it out in some of the worst high school golf weather I’ve seen in 18 years as a golf coach,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “High winds, cold temperatures and rain caused many of the golfers just to walk in and not finish. However, our guys just kept playing and finished the round. Scores were higher than usual because of the elements, but we put in a good performance for the conditions.”

Young led Battle Mountain posting the lowest score for the team at 101 and finishing with the third-best score in the severe conditions.

Young was not alone at that number as the Alex Lopez finished two strokes behind Young with a score of 103 and finished in fifth place at the end of the day.

Jake Smith finished third for Battle Mountain shooting 115 and Jimmy Harris finished with a final score of 121. Battle Mountains final score of the day came from first-time golfer Bradley Rodgers posting a score of 141 in the extreme weather conditions.

The Longhorns finished with a total team of 440 and was second to the Elko junior varsity team who shot 436.

After a rough starting weekend in Hawthorne, the Longhorns bounced back with a solid showing in West Wendover.

The Longhorns retake the course Wednesday for the Elko golf tournament but due to the Elko golf course not currently open the teams will travel back to West Wendover again for another tournament.

The Longhorns and coach Wallock look forward to better weather and lower scores as the boys will enter their third tournament of the season.
