Loopy Leprechauns raise $3,500 for suicide prevention

The Winnemucca Sports Complex played host to 10 teams last weekend as the softball season kicked off with the annual Loopy Leprechaun softball tournament. The event began Saturday, March 10 as teams played round-robin-style for seeding. Sunday’s tournament continued with double eliminations until the top three teams were determined. Smoke N Poke took first place in the tournament while Shoreline placed second. Third place went to Evil Empire, a team out of Elko. The event also featured raffles with prizes, and a 50/50 raffle. The latter raised a total of $3,500, according to event organizers Christine and Jackson Begay, Melinda Riemersma and Jenny Setzer. The money will go toward Humboldt Connection Suicide Prevention Awareness, an entity under the Frontier Community Action Agency. The Winnemucca Host Lions Club also contributed efforts toward organizing and staffing the event.
