Warrior wrestlers start off strong in opener at Lovelock

The Winnemucca Junior High School wrestling team kicked off its season this past Saturday at Pershing County High School in Lovelock.

The Warriors took over 30 wrestlers to Lovelock and came back home with 10 champions.

Angel Huerta (115 pounds), Giovani Sapien (144) and Merril Terry (168) were first in the eighth-grade division.

Kris Logue (94), Ivan Contreras (114), Isaiah VanKuiken (121) and Jesse Hawkins (131) were second.

David Hunter (112) placed third and Joseph Garcia (132) and Angel Varela (245) were fourth.

Seventh-graders Coda Nichols (60), Wade Mori (93) and Shaun Cramer (124) came back home with individual titles.

Roger Facey (75), Braden Hammargren (90) and Frank Davis (105) were second. Travis Urain (83) and Damon Fetty (123) placed third and Isaiah Ortives (165) finished fourth.

Fifth and sixth-graders are also allowed to wrestle on the squad. French Ford sixth-graders Anthony Gonzalez (92) and David Walker (163) were first. Chris Gildone (86) placed second and Brayden Casalez (94) and Luke Fentress (120) were third. Joseph VanKuiken (90) placed fourth.

French Ford fifth-graders Logan Ricci (74) and Jhett Harbor (90) won their weight classes. Kaiden Braun (87) finished third and Sebastian Garcia (120) was fourth.

Winnemucca travels to Fernley this Saturday and is at home on Saturday, March 10, beginning at 9 a.m.
