Professionals and amateurs put their cars and their driving skills to the test at the Good Times Drag Strip on Jungo Road last Friday and Saturday.
The Northern Nevada Racing Association (NNRA) hosted the “Jumpin June Drags” at the 1/8 mile track, as Top Eliminator, Pro and Street/Sportsman classes competed against the clock and themselves.
"I usually race, but my car is broke," said Darla Archer, the Secretary of the NNRA. "Today I am running the pits, keeping the cars flowing so they know where they are supposed to be and when they are supposed to be there.”
Thirty drivers competed on Friday night and 15 made it back on Saturday.
“Our big money race is next month and that will bring a lot more cars here,” Archer added.
The July Good Times Race will be held July 20 and 21.
Driver entry fees pay the purse for these events, with the prizes prorated based on the number of cars that compete. 16 cars are considered a full field.
“I’m so amazed at how they set this all up,” commented Siera Parker, a spectator at the Saturday races. “To see this racing community come together like this, they are basically a family.”
One of the cars competing was a 1946 Ford business coupe driven by Butch Ranson. Ranson said of his coupe,
“This has been the world’s fastest 1946 Ford business coupe in the world for 22 years. I just have to get my technique down to get it off that line.” “My record speed here is one hundred sixty something,” Ranson recalled.
The Top Eliminator class is the fastest cars, the Pro is as the name implies, and the Street/Sportsman class allows any street legal car to give it their all on a professional drag strip.
Tonya Hunewill of Winnemucca brought her 1972 Chevy Malibu to the track on Saturday.
“I have been racing here about four years steady,” Hunewill said. “Friends of ours made this motor for me, customed out with the “Logan” skateboard.” Her license plate reads “LHH” in honor of her son Logan. Hunewill was her own pit crew and cheering section at this race, “I’m just redneckin’ it over here,” she quipped.
