By a unanimous vote, the Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees voted to name the gym floor at Lowry High School “Pat Hart Court” at the meeting held on June 12.
Hart was a teacher and coach at Lowry High School in the 1970s and is a member of the “Lowry Hall of Fame.”
He led the Buckaroo boys basketball team to three consecutive 2A state championships in 1973-1975. During that stretch, the Lowry boys basketball team won 47 consecutive games. That streak is the third longest in state history in boys basketball. Virginia City has the top two streaks at 93 and 55.
Hart compiled a career record of 75-5 at Lowry. Hart passed away on Jan. 19, 2018.
“As long as the floor is being re-done anyways, this is the time to take on this project,” HCSD Superintendent Dave Jensen said at the meeting. “The cost of this should be significantly less than $1,000.”
Two small sections of the floor at each entrance will be updated to show “Pat Hart Court” in Royal Blue.
A small plaque will be placed outside the gym doors to let everyone know who Hart was and his accomplishments and contributions to LHS.
The new court floor will be dedicated at a later time and date. The floor is being redone this summer and will not be ready for use until the start of the fall sports season for the Lowry volleyball team.
The tentative plan is to have players that played for coach Hart perform a ribbon-cutting ceremony at this dedication.
Joe Dendary played for coach Hart at LHS on all three of the state championship teams. Dendary was the driving force behind this effort to honor his former coach.
“Coach Hart was a good, honest man, I enjoyed playing for him,” Dendary said. “He got us in great shape and motivated us.”
