Obituary: Barbara Spitzer Haney Phipps

Barbara passed away at home early Friday morning on May 25, 2018.

A native Nevadan, she was born in Winnemucca on July 19, 1940, the first child to parents Bob and Doris Spitzer.

She lived most of her life in Winnemucca and Reno and loved the sagebrush land, desert lakes, and mountains of northern Nevada.

Her childhood was spent in Winnemucca where she attended Winnemucca Grammar School and Humboldt County High until her senior year when her family moved to Reno.

She graduated from Reno High in 1958. Family, friends, and work filled her life. She married her first husband, Buddy Haney, in 1958; and together they had two sons, Stephen and Darryl.

During those early years, she raised her children, bought the house in which she has lived for the last 52 years, and owned and ran TSI Trucking Company. Later, she married George Phipps and welcomed his children George and Lori.

Barbara loved books, the ocean, and any and all dogs. She had a strong faith. She was determined, warm, fun, and funny. She was a “mother” figure to all her sons’ friends and treasured all the good people in her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George (2013) and her parents Bob and Doris Spitzer.

Barbara will be missed and remembered by her children Stephen Haney (Debbie) and Darryl Haney; step-children, George Phipps and Lori Fulton (Aaron); sister, Carolyn Banis (Rick) and brothers, Bob Spitzer and David Spitzer (Luanne).

Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins and many lifelong friends. Her family is grateful to have had her in our lives and will have a private gathering to celebrate her life.
