Spike Frog Volleyball is a non-profit organization that tours the west putting on camps for kids in grades 6-12. This is the eighth year that the group has come to Winnemucca.
Josh Taylor was one of the coaches administering the camp. Taylor said, “During the summer we put these camps together for high schools and junior highs in Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Nevada.” “We generally go to smaller towns like Winnemucca.”
The camp was held July 19-21 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily at the Ralph V. Whitworth Recreational Complex at the Boys & Girls Club of Winnemucca.
The cost of the camp was $90 and included a free T-shirt. The camp is designed to teach the fundamentals of the game in addition to teamwork and strategies involved with volleyball.
First-time Spike Frog camp attendee Shelbie Hoyt (12) gave her thoughts about the camp.
“I came to Spike Frog because I wanted to get better and my friends told me it was good," Hoyt said. I learned how to bump, how to set and how to spike. Setting is my favorite, I think it is fun.”
Camper Allie Hummel (16) quipped, “This is actually my fifth camp. I keep coming back to Spike Frog because I learn a lot and it’s a lot of fun to play games. The most important thing I have learned at these camps is to be a good teammate. Everyone gets riled up when you get a good hit or a good dig.”
“The turnout is a little bit lower this year (27), but I have noticed how well the girls hear the instruction and then make a change,” Taylor commented.
“They are very coachable.”
