The Adult Co-ed Softball League has returned to Battle Mountain this summer with plans to make help town causes and charities.
The league was ramped back up after a five-year hiatus with a board of seven members, insurance, a 501C3 non-profit status, approval for field use by the County Commission, and a liquor license for the concessions.
For this summer, there are seven teams that play Tuesday-Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Jim Stewart Softball Fields next to the Mountain View Golf Course.
Board member, Dawnette Johnson, says the turnout of players has been strong with an average of 15 — 20 players per team.
Johnson cited the involvement and dedication of all involved, noting how many of the board members are also active players on their teams.
With this upswing, Johnson says the league is looking to do a big tournament next year that would give back to community.
Though these future plans are key, the league is also raising funds this season for Battle Mountain three year-old Ronen Andersen who has been diagnosed with leukemia. Both of his parents also play in the league.
The league plans for all profits from the Aug. 7-9 games’ concession sales to go to Andersen’s leukemia care.
Next year, said Johnson, the league would love to have an even larger tournament to give back to the community and to support other organizations by giving them a chance to raise funds for their operations.
“Hopefully next year it can be bigger,” Johnson said.
