Cow Country Classic returns to Winnemucca

The Winnemucca Events Center was full of activity last weekend as the Legacy Penning and Sorting Championships were held on Friday through Sunday.

Team penning and ranch sorting combines practical cowboy work with competition for prizes and pride.

In the team penning, contestants have 60 seconds to separate specific cattle from the herd and coax them into the pen.

Ranch sorting is similar, in that 60 seconds is all the time the cowboys get to sort out their herd.

Remy and James Greer were on hand and organized this event.

“My husband and I have run this event the last four years, but it has been going on here for 25 years,” Remy said. “Our contestants are from all over Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Texas and Canada. We have about 75 contestants this year, down from previous years.”

All results from the contest can be found at Legacychampionships.com.

“Winnemucca is actually my favorite pen,” Remy noted. “I love the grounds, I love the facility, I love the town. It’s a super small town, but they’re always welcoming, the restaurants are good and the people are so nice here.”
