Lowry High School held a basketball camp July 9-13 for grade school boys and girls.

The camp was run by the new girls varsity basketball coach Melanie Thurmond with the assistance of other LHS coaches and the LHS girls basketball players.

The first session each day was for youngsters in the first-third grade.

“We are trying to teach them the fundamental aspects of the game,” Thurmond said. “Footwork, defense, shooting, layups, passing and dribbling are the focus.”

Muggy Freeman from Battle Mountain brought her grandson Greyson Newkirk to the camp. “Layups are the most fun, but I learned about boxing out on defense,” Newkirk said.

“The camp I’m most excited about is the ‘post and guard’ camp,” Thurmond added. Post and guard camp was broken into two groups, fourth-sixth grade and seventh-eighth grade. “We are really trying to get them comfortable in their position by teaching them some more advanced ball handling and post moves,” Thurmond commented.

The turnout for this camp was very good, 68 campers of all ages participated this year.
