Upwards of 500 cowboys and cowgirls from across the US, Canada and even Australia came to compete in the Silver State International Rodeo at the Winnemucca Events Center.

The rodeo is billed as “a high school tradition since 1985.” It was started to allow the high school competitors that didn’t qualify for Nationals another venue to compete in.

Last year a junior high division was added.

The first of eight rodeo performances was held at 7 p.m. Monday night, the final rodeo performance was Friday at 7 p.m., and the top 15 finals rodeo showcasing the best of the best went off at 11 a.m. on Saturday July 7.

Events that were held included barrel racing, bull riding, pole bending, bareback, goat tying, saddle bronc, breakaway, tie down, queen contest, steer wrestling, girls cutting, boys cutting, team roping and reined cow horse.

Contestants were competing for points that would win them the all-around boys and girls titles, teams, trap shoot and rifle shoot titles.

Upwards of $90,000 in prizes and scholarships will be awarded to the winners of the 2018 SSIR, as well as the all-around winners receiving a custom saddle for their efforts.

Rodeo results and more information about the SSIR can be found at ssir.us.
