Battle Mountain wrestlers dominate 2A league duals

The teams of the Northern Nevada AA wrestling world converged on the Battle Mountain High School gym last Friday for a full day of duals to determine seeding for this weekend’s Northern League Tournament.

After the whistles stopped, it was the boys in green that stood at the top, as kings of the mountain. Battle Mountain’s wrestlers defeated every team that was put in front of them en-route to their sixth consecutive league duals title.

“We place a lot of emphasis on the team part of wrestling throughout the year,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “Duals are a great time to show what a team sport wrestling really is.”

As a team, the Longhorns were in full force this weekend and they completely overwhelmed the competition with a perfect 8-0 record.

“The kids were excited to wrestle in their gym for a change,” Domagala said. “They came out focused and never looked back. Now we get ready for the League Tournament this Saturday”.

Battle Mountain defeated Yerington 66-15, Pershing County 48-0, NYTC 66-12, Excel Christian 78-0, Eureka 78-0, Wells 78-0, Owyhee 78-0 and Incline 78-6.

Cameron Thompson, Jose Guizar, Jordan Gonzalez, Jake Legarza, Daegan McClary, Mason Chopp and Tristin Cordingley secured No. 1 seeds heading into the league tournament.

Declan McClary, Bobby Kester, Fabian Castaneda and Kris Hall will be ranked second. Lyle Whitten secured a third seed, while Tyler Rochester will enter ranked fourth.

Also competing for the Longhorns were: Kohl Bellm and Michael Malone.

The Northern 2A Regional Championship will take place Saturday at Pershing County High School in Lovelock. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the state championships.

The NIAA State Championships are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 9, at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
