The Battle Mountain High School JV basketball teams continue to win, as both the boys and girls teams ending the week with a 5-1 record. The JV boys handily defeated Wells and North Tahoe while JV girls swept the week of three games.
JV boys crush Wells
On Tuesday, Jan. 16, the Battle Mountain JV boys traveled to Wells to take the court against the Leopards. The Longhorns established an early lead on the Leopards, jumping out to a 43-9 lead at halftime. Freshman guard Allan Martinez showed promise to his basketball career at BMHS, leading the Longhorns in scoring with 15 points off 6-of 11-shooting and added four steals in the contest.
Another freshman, Dustin Plants, continued to show his value on the court, leading the Longhorns in rebounds, with five and scoring 10 points off 4-of-9 nine shooting. Battle Mountain ultimately defeated Wells 70-15.

off Leopards
The JV girls, were at home against Wells on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and beat the Leopards 38-24. The 14-point victory was a hard-fought one for the Longhorns. Kira Smith and Alma Diaz were the top scorers.
JV boys fall to Incline
On Friday, Battle Mountain traveled to Incline to play a league game against the Highlanders. Incline defeated Battle Mountain by 11 points last time the two teams competed. This time, the Longhorns kept the game close. Throughout the first three quarter the Longhorns were within two points of the Highlanders but with two minutes left in the third quarter the Longhorns gave up an 8-0 run. The Highlanders defeated the Longhorns 50-40.
D.J. Martinez and Roy Chavira led the Longhorns in scoring, with 11 points in the game. The Longhorn struggled shooting throughout the contest, going 3-for-24 from 3-point line. All three shots were made with only two minutes left in the contest.
BMHS girls beat Incline
The JV girls earned a different outcome, taking control of the game early against Incline and defeating the Highlanders 40-26. Battle Mountain struggled to make shots in the game but thanks to some strong rebounding by Alexis Andrade, McKenzie Lemaire and Grace Cahill, the girls gave themselves the extra opportunities they needed to win the game.

On the final leg of the trip, Battle Mountain traveled to North Tahoe on Saturday. The Longhorns struggled in the early going against the Lakers and came out flat with their shooting. North Tahoe pressed the Longhorns hard throughout the contest, causing enough turnovers to go into the half with a four-point lead at 25-21.
However, Battle Mountain responded, coming back into the second half, shooting better and bringing more energy to the game. In the fourth quarter, the Longhorn boys outscored the Lakers by 13 points, to bring the final score to 60-49. Chavira and Jace Clark played one of their better games this season, as Chavira scored 22 points and brought in nine rebounds. Clark scored 14 points in the game and also dominated the boards with seven rebounds in the contest.

The Longhorn JV girls left little doubt who would win their game as, they blew out the Lakers 55-24. Smith continued to put on a strong shooting display for the Lady Longhorns. In addition. timely rebounding helped the girls seal the victory against the Lakers.
The JV basketball teams hit the road once again to Silver Stage High School on Friday and Yerington on Saturday.
