As February came to a close, the Tah-Neva wrestling season started off in full swing.

The Battle Mountain Junio High School Shorthorns traveled to Lovelock to face off against 10 other teams from throughout northern Nevada and they quickly established themselves as a top contender for the league title.

“We had a good showing for our first time out this season,” said coach Mitch Domagala. “Our older kids wrestled real well and the younger kids showed they have a ton of promise with the performances they had.”

Battle Mountain started the day with a lot of focus on the mats and they just kept getting more dialed in as the day went on.

Leading the way for the Shorthorns were Spencer Thompson, Wiatt Kelly, Chris Leloup, Stone Whitlock and Zyelynn Putt, as they claimed first place.

Sean Scherer, Ben Disbro and Terrance Fetterly finished in the runner-up spot. Garrett Cosper, Drayden McClary and Brice Domagala came home in third place, while Ari Kyllonen, David Carrera, Jacee Herald, Hunter Natoli and Nolan Chopp finished in fourth place.

Also wrestling for the Green Team were Colten Mills, Dario Jimenez, Heiley Hall, Adriana Penson, Scott Henslee, Madalynn Abbasi and Dalton Shake.

“These guys wrestled well, and with a little more practice they should be able to get into the medal rounds,” Domagala said.

Battle Mountain wrestles again this Saturday in Fernley at 9 a.m.
