The Pershing County High School gym was the place to be on Friday night.

The Pershing County boys basketball team hosted the West Wendover Wolverines. The Mustangs punched in their 11th league win of the 2017-18 season, beating the Wolverines 73-62.

With the win, Pershing County improved to 21-3 overall and 11-1 in the Northern 2A.

Jason Allen coaches the Mustangs.

Revenge is sweet

“This game meant a lot to the kids for a couple of reasons,” said Allen. “Obviously seeding was important. We’re now in first place with two games to go.”

Pershing County (11-1) tops Battle Mountain (11-2), West Wendover (9-3) and Yerington (5-6) in the Northern 2A rankings.

“But more importantly, Wendover kicked our butts at their place earlier in the season,” continued the coach.

Wendover stunned Pershing County on Jan. 6 beating the Mustangs 76-43.

“These kids work hard and have a lot of pride. Both teams are good, so this was an important win for our boys.”

Pershing County’s Derek Sandusky led the scoring with 30 points. Lane Condie and Brandon Zile each added 10 more.

The Mustangs jumped out in the first quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 23-16. But West Wendover fought back. At halftime, the score was a near tie (36-34) with the Mustangs up by two points.

However, Pershing County’s defense came alive in the second half. The Mustangs outscored their guests in both the third (15-11) and fourth (22-17) quarters to seize the win.
