Battle Mountain JV boys extend win streak to six

The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team extended its winning streak to six games this past weekend at home.

The Battle Mountain JV girls fell short against White Pine on Friday nut rebounded to but blow out Coral Academy on Saturday.

This past Friday, White Pine traveled to Battle Mountain for a Northern 2A match-up. The Lady Longhorns started off quickly against the Lady Cats, jumping out to a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Kira Smith led the Lady Longhorns in scoring during the contest with 13 points off 5-of-9 shooting, while center Grace Cahill led Battle Mountain with five rebounds.

The JV girls battled hard with the Bobcats throughout the game and held a 22-12 lead at halftime.

White Pine came out tough in the second half, forcing the Longhorns into another tightly contested game. At the end of the third quarter, the Bobcats trimmed the Longhorn lead to just two points. Battle Mountain was held to only six points in the fourth quarter losing 41-35.

As for the Longhorn boys, they dominated their weekend opponents. White Pine struggled against the Longhorns’ defense with every player on the Battle Mountain roster earning at least one steal in the contest. At halftime, the Longhorns led the Bobcats 35-19 and would allow only 11 more points in the game, en route to a 66-30 win.

Roy Chavira led Battle Mountain with 14 points and six rebounds, most of which came in the first half of the contest.

Alex Valles ran the offense with precision, resulting in his nine points and seven assists. Role players like Thomas Amezcua took advantage of the opportunity to get onto the court against the Bobcats and scored a season-high seven points off 3-of-8 shooting.

On Saturday, both the JV teams dominated their non-conference game against Coral Academy out of Reno.

The JV girls defeated Coral Academy 41-9, while the JV boys beat the Falcons 62-19. Alan Martinez was selected as the Longhorns’ player of the game for his performance. He scored 14 points off 5-of-10 shooting, snagged four steals and passed for four assists in the game.

The win extended the Longhorns’ win streak to six games heading into their final game of the season against West Wendover on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Battle Mountain lost to West Wendover the last time they played and are looking to rebound against the rival squad.
