Buckaroo wrestlers finish second at Northern 3A Duals in Fernley

The Lowry High School wrestling team began its postseason run this past weekend with the Northern 3A Duals in Fernley.

The Buckaroos went 8-1 over the two days with the only loss against defending state champion Spring Creek. The duals set the seeding for the regional championship.

"We wrestled pretty good," said LHS coach John Brooks. "Some teams moved some guys around in different weight classes and made things more interesting."

Lowry routs Elko

Lowry opened the duals on Friday, Jan. 26, against Elko and won 10 of the 14 matches. Freshman Issac Mori was the only Buckaroo not to wrestle and he won by forfeit at 106 pounds.

Taylor Corak (113), Caden Ricci (120), Cade Dell (132), Bryan Day (138), Quint Bell (162), Ryan Johnson (160), Cade Billingsley (170), Anthony Peterson (182), Joe Peterson (195) and Trent McKellips (220) won by pin. AJ Gonzalez recorded a 9-7 win in overtime at 145 pounds.

Buckaroos beat Vaqueros

Lowry scored the first 46 points in its dual with Fernley and beat the Vaqueros 58-18. Matthew Souza (126) opened the dual with a 9-7 win in overtime. Cade Bell, Day and Gonzalez followed with victories by pin to make the score 21-0.

Quint Bell and Johnson followed with wins by decision and Billingsley and Anthony Peterson won by pin to increase the advantage to 40-0.

Joe Peterson earned a forfeit win at 195 pounds, when Fernley got on the scoreboard after victories at 220 and 285 pounds, respectively. Mori won his match at 106 pounds by a 6-3 decision and Ricci claimed victory at 120 pounds after an unsportsmanlike violation on Fernley.

Spring Creek knocks

off Lowry

Spring Creek won the first three matches of the dual and pulled away for the victory. Quint Bell picked up Lowry’s first win at 152 pounds on the strength of an 8-4 decision. Billingsley, Corak and Souza were the only other Lowry wrestlers to win their matches.

"Spring Creek is solid," Brooks said."We had a chance to win a couple more matches against them but could not get it done."

Lowry blanks Dayton

In its first dual on Saturday, Jan. 27, Lowry only had three matches in an 84-0 win over Dayton. Johnson, Ricci and Anthony Peterson all won their matches by pin.

Buckaroos cruise

past Vikings

Lowry had little trouble in beating South Tahoe 73-3, winning 13 of the 14 matches. Mori, Day, Quint Bell, Anthony Peterson, Joe Peterson and Josiah Chapman won by forfeit.

Corak, Ricci, Souza, Cade Bell and Gonzalez won by pin and Johnson and McKellips won by decision.

Lowry crushes Sparks

Lowry lost just one match in a 67-6 win over Sparks. The Buckaroos won five matches by forfeit, including Mori, Corak, Johnson, Joe Peterson and Chapman. Ricci, Cade Bell, Gonzalez and Billingsley pinned their opponents. Souza had the closest match of the dual, winning his bout 8-7. Quint Bell and Anthony Peterson collected 5-0 wins.

Buckaroos pin Greenwave

Lowry dropped its first two matches to Churchill County but rallied for a 66-15 victory. The brother duo of Anthony and Joe Peterson won by forfeit to give Lowry a 12-9 lead and the Buckaroos did not trail again.

McKellips, Chapman, Corak, Ricci and Souza won their matches by pin, along with a win by forfeit by Mori increased the lead to 48-9. Day, Gonzalez and Quint Bell finished the dual with wins.

"Fallon moved some guys around and didn't have its full roster," Brooks said. "Right now, I don't know what to expect from them."

Lowry shuts out Truckee

Lowry closed out the weekend by shutting out Truckee 84-0 to finish the weekend 8-1. All the matches were decided by pin or forfeit.

Lowry is in Spring Creek this weekend for the Northern 3A Regional Championships. Action resumes today (Saturday) at 9 a.m. The top three finishers in each weight class advances to the NIAA State Championships on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
