The McDermitt High School girls basketball squad headed north to the Crane Christmas Tournament in Crane, Ore., on Friday, Dec. 14, to take on North Lake (Silver Lake, Ore.) and emerged with a 61-33 victory.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an 18-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter and took a 30-13 lead at the half.
The Lady Cowboys took the reins in the third quarter, out scoring MHS 15-11 to make the score 41-28 heading into the final period.
McDermitt dominated the final eight minutes 20-5, behind strong performances by Takayla Antonio and Kalli Sam.
“We saw some good things from Takayla and Kalli today, and I was impressed with my team’s ability to keep their composure in hostile gyms,” MHS head coach Jaimi Wilkinson said. “We are looking forward to being at home for a couple of weeks so that we can get back to a regular practice schedule and start fine tuning the areas that we need to.”
Senior Precious Masters is ranked 17th in the nation and No. 1 in the state of Nevada in scoring with 26.6 points per game. She also hauls in 13.9 rebounds a game.
On Saturday,Dec. 15, McDermitt took on the Lady Mustangs at their home court and fell 51-36 and are now 8-2 on the season.
Crane jumped out to a 12-9 lead in the first quarter and they stretched it to 26-16 at the half.
The third quarter brought 12 more points for the locals and only nine for the Lady Bulldogs. 13-11 was the tally in the fourth, and McDermitt was sent home with their second loss of the season.
“It was a tough weekend on us," Wilkinson said. " We are trying to battle through some injuries and illnesses; we did not necessarily play our best basketball to date.”
The Lady Bulldogs travel to California for the West Coast Jamboree from Dec. 27-29.
