Battle Mountain boys fall to Weest Wendover, beat White Pine to start league play

The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team opened the Northern 2A season with a mixed bag of results.

The Longhorns traveled to West Wendover on Friday night and suffered a 74-48 loss. The Wolverines led 16-14 after eight minutes of play and extended the margin to 40-24 at halftime.

However, Battle Mountain cut the deficit down to six points in the third quarter, only to see West Wendover rally late in the quarter to lead by 17 points.

Roy Chavira had 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Longhorns. Danny Diaz added 12 points and three assists and DJ Martinez had 10 points seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Marcus Jury added seven rebounds.

“We learned a lot against the aggressive West Wendover defense,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “We were down six points early in third quarter but a few turnovers turned into fast break layups for them and quickly turned that lead into 17 points. Our inexperience showed and hopefully we will be better down the road because of this tough loss.”
