WINNEMUCCA — The Battle Mountain High School wrestling made the short trip to Winnemucca this past weekend for the Cody Louk Invitational.

The Longhorns tied for seventh place along side league rival Yerington with 107 points. Spanish Springs, the defending 4A state champion, won the tournament with 216.50 points. Host Lowry and Reed tied for second place with 185 points. Fernley (138.50), Bishop Manogue (134) and Pershing County (131) were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Jordan Gonzalez was the top finisher for the Longhorns, placing second at 132 pounds. Gonzalez received a first-round bye and pinned Reed;s Marco Budija in the third period in his first match.

In the quarterfinals, Gonzalez pinned Pershing County’s Caleb Noff in the second period and he earned his way into the final with a 14-2 win over Damonte Ranch’s Spencer Mitchell. Gonzalez came up short in the final, losing 13-5 to Lowry’s Taylor Corak.

Declan McClary placed third at 113 pounds. Like Gonzalez, McClary had a bye in round one.  McClary needed just 68 seconds to pin North Valley’s Adrian Ruscetta in the quarterfinals. 

McClary lost an 8-4 decision to Damonte Ranch’s Bryce Bell in the semifinals but he fought his way back through the bracket. In the consolation semifinals, McClary beat Wooster’s Ian Harshberger 6-2 and in the third-place bout he pinned Fernley’s Morgan Zalyniak in the third period.

Jose Guizar was fourth at 138 pounds and was one of the busier wrestlers with six matches on the weekend. He won his first two matches by pin over Pershing County’s Colton Wanner and Hug’s Gabriel Smith.

In the quarterfinals, Guizar came away with a 6-5 win over Fernley’s Kyle Jones but her lost to Spanish Springs’ Cory Sego in the semifinals. Guizar came back to beat Spanish Springs’ Brady Masset 8-4 in the consolation semifinals but lost to Lowry’s Caden Ricci in  the third-place match. 

Kris Hall was fourth at 182 pounds. After a first-round bye, Hall pinned Yerington’s Clint Smith and Tonopah’s Jessy Yeager in 74 seconds to advance to the semifinals.

Hall lost to Lowry’s Anthony Peterson in the semifinals but bounced back to beat Elko’s Gabe Cortez 8-6 in the consolation semifinals. Hall dropped a 9-2 decision to Reed’s Christopher Williams in the third-place match.

Owen Oakes also wrestled at 182 pounds and finished fifth. After a first-round bye, Oakes lost his first match to Elko’s Carl Hansen by pin. However, Oakes came back to win three matches in the consolation bracket over Fernley’s Kale Kreller, Tonopah’s Yeager and Bishop Manogue’s Brayden Murdock.

Oakes lost in the consolation semifinals but came back to pin Elko’s Gabe Cortez in 57 seconds for fifth place.

Daegan McClary was sixth at 170 pounds. He reached the quarterfinals with a pin over Tonopah’s Brighon Skiles. McClary lost in the quarterfinals but came back to earn two wins in the consolation bracket. 

Tristin Cordingley was sixth at 195 pounds but wrestled just twice after getting hurt in the semifinals.

Bryce Tucker (132), Jose N. Guizar (132), Michael Malone (138), Zach Duggan (170) and Lyle Whitten (285) also wrestled for the Longhorns.

Battle Mountain heads to Twin Falls, Idaho this weekend.
