Battle Mountain boys pick up three wins in Virginia City

With a young team on the floor, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team continued its winning ways this past weekend at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City.

The Longhorns went 3-1 with wins over Coleville, Calif., Pahranagat Valley and McDermitt. The only loss was Sierra Lutheran and Battle Mountain stands at 6-3 on the season.

In the tournament opener last Thursday, Battle Mountain outscored Coleville 15-7 in the first quarter en route to a 65-50 victory. The Longhorns led the contest 31-23 at halftime but outscored the Wolves 17-9 in the third quarter. 

 DJ Martinez had a team-high 20 points to go with three steals, while Danny Diaz had 11 points, nine assists and three steals. Roy Chavira also reached double figures with 10 points and had a team-high five rebounds.

In its first game last Friday, Battle Mountain started slowly and trailed Pahranagat Valley 6-3 after a quarter of play. However, the Longhorns used a 16-4 run in the second quarter to earn the 41-35 win. Pahranagat Valley outscored Battle Mountain 26-22 in the second half but it was not enough to come back for the win.

Diaz finished with 12 points and four assists, while Martinez had 11 points, five steals and two assists. Marcus Jury grabbed 11 rebounds to go with four points, while Jace Clark and Chavira added five and four points, respectively.

In the second game on Friday, Battle Mountain could not overcome a slow start in a 57-52 loss to Sierra Lutheran. The Falcons led 14-13 after a quarter of play but used a 21-14 run in the second quarter to build an eight-point advantage at halftime.

The Longhorns made a run in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.  

Diaz was the only Longhorn in double figures with 19 points to go with five assists. Martinez, Jury and Chavira each had seven points, with Jury grabbing seven rebounds. Erik Martinez had three steals and two points, while Clark had five points.

Battle Mountain closed out the tournament on Saturday with a 67-24 win over McDermitt.

The Longhorns raced out to a 25-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Battle Mountain extended the lead in the middle quarters with a 34-16 run.  

DJ Martinez led Battle Mountain with 13 points, five assists and three steals. Diaz joined him in double figures with 12 points to go with five assists. Alex Valles knocked down four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points. Alan Martinez had seven points and four steals and Erik Martinez had two points and four assists.

Chavira added six points and seven rebounds and Tristan Wahrenberg had six rebounds.

“Another good weekend of game experience for my inexperienced team,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. Alamo (Pahranagat Valley) and Sierra Lutheran were especially good because they were big, strong, and aggressive which were things my guys needed to get used as league play starts this week.”

Battle Mountain opens league play this weekend on the road starting on Friday at West Wendover at 7:30 p.m. (MST). 

The Longhorns are in Ely on Saturday to play White Pine at 3:30 p.m.

Battle Mountain makes its home debut on Thursday, Nov. 20, against North Tahoe at 7:30 p.m. The Longhorns host Incline on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. to finish off the calendar year.
