Lady Bulldogs fall to Mustangs

The McDermitt High School (MHS) girls basketball squad went to Oregon last Monday to take on Jordan Valley High School in their annual “Border War” game.

Despite scoring 57 points, the Lady Bulldogs allowed the Lady Mustangs 65, and their season record dropped to 3-1.

“It was a hard fought battle against Jordan Valley; I was happy with the way my kids battled,” said MHS girls basketball coach Jaimi Wilkinson. “Jordan Valley shot the lights out in the first two quarters and had us down by 15 before we were able to make any defensive adjustments. We were able to cut that deficit to 10 going into half-time.”

At the end of the first quarter McDermitt trailed 23-15. Despite adding another 11 points in the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs were down 36-26 at the half.

"We out-scored Jordan by eight points coming out of the break," Wilkinsaon said. "Katie (Crutcher) and Jasmine (Northrup) hit some huge outside shots, which gave Precious (Masters) a little room to navigate and score in the paint. We got quality minutes from everyone in this game.”

Masters finished with 27 points and seven rebounds, while Crutcher added 17 points and made 5-of-8 3-point attempts.

“I was disappointed with our lack of rebounding,” Wilkinson added. “We usually dominate the boards, but we struggled against Jordan Valley. It will be a point of emphasis in our practices this week.”

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Virginia City for the Comstock Classic on Thursday, Dec. 6 for a rematch with Pahranagat Valley (Alamo).

McDermitt defeated Alamo 56-24 on Dec. 1 at the Wells Rural Electric Company (WREC) Basketball Tournament. They were slated to take on Round Mountain and Virginia City on Friday, and Battle Mountain on Saturday. Results of the contests were not available at press time.
