Buckaroo wrestlers start off strong in Fallon

The Lowry High School wrestling squad traveled to Fallon for the Earl Wilkens Memorial Tournament on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1.

The Buckaroos took down Elko, Wells, Wooster, Douglas, Churchill County (Fallon), and Carson. Their only loss came against Spanish Springs.

Spanish Springs is the defending 4A state champion.

"Friday afternoon and Saturday we wrestled nine individual duals and went 8-1, which is good; better than most I suppose," said LHS  coach John Brooks. "Our only loss team-wise was to Spanish Springs, and they are the returning 4A state champions.”

Lowry competes in the Northern  3A Division against Churchill County (Fallon), Dayton, Elko, Fernley, South Tahoe, Sparks, Spring Creek, North Valleys and Truckee.

“What is nice about the first week is that we can see where we need most of our work,” Brooks said. “We had three wrestlers go undefeated. Isaiah (Blanco), Taylor (Corak), and Anthony (Peterson).

Blanco and Peterson both had six pins while going 9-0 in their matches. Cade Bell and Jimmy Rackley both went 8-1, while Josiah Chapman, Kole Mattson, Isaac Mori, and Caden Ricci all had seven wins apiece.

“The kids have been working hard; we did not do too bad last weekend," Brooks said. "It is a good place to start because we are a young team and we have not done anything yet. Every team that was there has the same attitude about it that I do. We are all trying to find out where we are; how we stack up and where we need work. We can get on the mat and wrestle somebody other than ourselves to see where we need most of our work from a coaching standpoint.”

The Bucks compiled an 87-27 record in the duals at Fallon, and they won the pin count 53-25 against their competition.

Lowry is hosting the Cody Louk Invitational match in Winnemucca on Friday and Saturday at the Winnemucca Events Complex.

The action starts on Friday at 3 p.m. and continues on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Brooks concluded, “We are a young team and our expectation is to win dual meets. It is how you do at the end, not how you do at the beginning.”
