On Friday morning, the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team traveled to the Treasure Valley to compete in the Buck’s Bags 32-Team dual tournament.
This tourney features the best teams that the Boise area has to offer. After two grueling days of competition the boys from the Silver State found themselves with an overall record of 4-2.
“We wrestled real well this weekend,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re heading in the right direction. A tournament like this is exactly what we needed so we could figure out where our weak areas are.”
On Friday, Battle Mountain went 3-0 as they defeated New Plymouth/Hillcrest 40-27. The dropped their next match to Emmitt 54-29, but bounced back with a 45-42 win over Middleton to end day one.
Saturday found the Longhorns in the quarterfinals of the 34-team tournament and the Horns were ready to go as they defeated Vallivue High by a score of 42-36. In the semifinals the green team dropped a tough match to Emmitt by a score of 51-22.
This put the team from the down south in the third place match where once again they would face Vallivue High.
“The kids knew we let those matches against Emmitt get away from us and they were focused on ending the day on a positive,” Domagala said.
From start to finish Battle Mountain controlled the dual with Vallivue as the posted a 43-30 win.
Leading the way for the Longhorns were Jordan Gonzalez and Daegan McClary with a perfect 6-0 records. Michael Malone and Tristin Cordingley had 5 wins apiece, while Declan McClary, Kris Hall and Lyle Whitten notched 4 victories.
Also winning for the Longhorns were Jose Guizar, Zach Duggan, Jorge Chavira and Owen Oakes. Jose Naverette, Dalton Shake, Brice Domagala and Tyler Rochester also competed over the weekend.
The Longhorns returned to action this week as they traveled to Elko to take on the Indians on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
Battle Mountain will compete in Winnemucca over the weekend at the annual Cody Louk Invitational at the Winnemucca Event Center.
